ELLEGARDEN復活！など5月の出来事にまつわる5曲

5月10日、パンク／ロックファン、いやいや、音楽ファンならば狂喜乱舞するニュースが駆け抜けた。バンドのオフィシャルサイトにて、2008年9月7日に行なった新木場スタジオコースト公演の活動休止以来、なんと約10年振りにELLEGARDEN活動再開のアナウンスが流れた。8月にライヴツアー3本開催するということで、これはもうチケット争奪戦になるだろう。08年の活動休止ライヴは僕も現場で観ているが、本当に人気絶頂期にバンドが止まったため、この10年の間にファンになった人も大勢いるに違いない。5月に腰を抜かすほどびっくりする出来事が起きたこともあり、今回は5月にちなんで楽曲をセレクトしてみました。

■「ジターバグ」（’03）／ELLEGARDEN

ELLEGARDENには名曲がたくさんありすぎて、それこそリスナーの数だけファイバリットソングがあると言っても過言ではない。個人的には「Salamander」や日本語詞を用いた「スターフィッシュ」など挙げ出せばきりがないほど、お気に入りソングはあるのだが、ここではバンドがブレイクするきっかけになった曲を選んでみた。03年に発表された2ndアルバム『BRING YOUR BOARD!!』に収録されている楽曲で、その後に改めて3rdシングル「ジターバグ」としてリカットされている。日本語のリリックという親しみやすさも手伝い、ライヴハウスで火が付いた彼らの代表曲と言っていい。

■「Distortion」（’18）／BABYMETAL

ELLEGARDEN復活もそうだが、BABYMETALがワールドツアー直前に2年振りとなる新曲をいきなり発表したことにも驚いた。MV公開と配信開始が同時だったこともあり、楽曲を繰り返して、もう何度聴いたことか。重厚なツーバス連打の勇ましいメタルサウンドに加え、そこから一気に突き抜けるSU-METALの凛としたハイトーンに心を鷲掴みにされる。ライヴを意識してか、ウォーウォー！の合唱フレーズを織り込んだパートもあり、BABYMETALとリスナーとの強い結び付きを意識した楽曲と言えるだろう。曲調的にもわりとストレートで、キャッチーなメロディーラインもずば抜けている。一瞬で耳を掴まれるものの、何十回聴いても飽きない強度を誇る楽曲だ。

■「ROCKET DIVE」（’98） ／hide with Spread Beaver

1998年5月2日（享年33歳）に他界したhide。今年は彼の20周忌ということでドキュメンタリー映画『HURRY GO ROUND』が5月26日から公開され、またhide with Spread Beaverのメンバーであり、hideの共同プロデューサーだったI.N.A.氏がhideとの音楽制作現場を中心に綴った書籍『君のいない世界〜hideと過ごした2486日の軌跡〜』も発売となる。この本も読ませてもらったが綿密な描写が多く、とても面白い内容だった。今回取り上げた曲は大のhide好きというEXILE SHOKICHIも2年振りになるソロ作のシングル「Underdog」（5月23日リリース）でもカバーしており、改めてhideが時代を超越したエバーグリーンな楽曲を作っていたのかがよく分かる。今聴いてもまったく色褪せていない。

■「ultra soul」（’01）／B'z

五月病という言葉もありますが、そんな時はこの曲で元気になりましょう！　今年はB'zにとって30周年ということで、東京・有楽町にて30年の歩みを辿る大型展示『SCENES』が開催され、秘蔵映像や衣装、メンバーの私物公開もあったりと、ファン垂涎の内容となっている。すでに前期は終わったものの、後期が5月11日から6月15日まで行われているので足を運んでみるのもいいだろう。30年ともなれば世代によって好きな楽曲やアルバムも分かれるだろうが、そんなジェネレーションさえ飛び越えて、今やB'zを知らない人をも巻き込むパワーがこの楽曲にはある。昨年、野外フェスで彼らを観た時に老若男女が騒ぐ光景を観て、「ultra soul」のすごさを思い知らされた。

■「Got Your Six」（’15） ／FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH

最後は…完全に“5”という数字にかけて、アメリカ発の5人組で本国でも人気が高い彼らの楽曲を取り上げた。現時点での最新作『GOT YOUR SIX』表題曲ナンバーで、勇壮なメタルリフからアガらずにはいられない骨太サウンドを響かせている。男臭い熱気ムンムンの音色だが、哀愁を帯びたメロディーでも聴かせ、緩急溢れる展開は聴き応えあり！　ちょっと最近疲れてきたなというあなたに贈るエネルギー補給ナンバーと言っておく。5月には約2年半振りになる待望のニューアルバム『AND JUSTICE FOR NONE』（METALLICAのオマージュか!?）も発表される。要チェック！
