coldrain、バンド史上過去最高にヘヴィな決定打的一枚！

今年1月には、新木場STUDIO COASTを満杯にしたcoldrain。日本で揺るぎない地盤を固めた彼らは世界を目指す！　その大事な節目に３rdミニアルバム『Until The End』を完成させた。バンドの真価と決意を込めた入魂作だ。

　今、coldrainから目を離すと絶対に後悔する。名前は知ってるけど、これまで音源やライヴに触れたことがない人がいたら、今からでも遅くはない。すぐにチェックしてもらいたい。彼らは間違いなく現行のラウドシーンにおいて、先頭集団に属しながら、その中心的な存在に登り詰めようとしている。特に昨年から今年にかけて、楽曲、演奏力、ライヴパフォーマンスの三要素全てが研磨され、一気に大爆発している。その衝撃を目の当たりにしたのは、前アルバム『THE REVELATION』レコ発ファイナル（2013年10月12日＠SHIBUYA-AX）だった。野獣とプリンスが表裏したスクリーム／クリーンヴォイスを自在に操るMasatoの秀逸な歌唱力に、繊細かつ重厚なツインギター、息がピッタリ合ったタイトなリズム隊がガッチリ噛み合い、一気呵成に畳み掛ける凄味に身動きが取れなかったほどだ。

　そして、今年1月8日に過去最大規模のワンマンライヴを新木場STUDIO COASTで行なうと、瞬殺ソールドアウトする人気でcoldrain熱は加速する一方だ。その模様は4月にリリースされた2ndライヴDVD＆1stライヴBlu-ray『EVOLVE』に収められ、映像はCrossfaith、HEY-SMITH、BABYMETALなどを手がけたことでも知られるあのINNI VISIONが担当。凄まじいライヴの興奮をより劇場空間に仕上げる凝った作りで、現場で体感した僕も感動が倍増した。それを経て、しっかり足場を固めた彼らの勢いは日本だけにとどまらない。今年は海外へ活躍のフィールドを広げ、その足がかりとして2月4日から3月4日の丸1カ月間（計21本13カ国）を同じイギリスの大手マネジメント『RAW POWER MANAGEMENT』に所属するBullet For My Valentineとともにヨーロッパツアーを決行した。最初は異国の地で戸惑うこともあったようだが、何本もライヴをやるごとに自信を深め、世界に通用するという実感を強く抱いたようだ。日本と世界を比べてどうこうと御託を並べるのではなく、フラットな距離感でライヴに挑んでいた。自分たちの音が通じるか、通じないか。問題はその一点だけであり、それは日本も世界も同じだろ？という感覚。その姿勢は新世代らしい清々しさにあふれている。

　日本に帰ってくると、イベントやライヴに引っ張りだこで多忙を極める彼ら。そんな状況下、前置きが随分長くなったが、ここに３rdミニアルバム『Until The End』が届いた。毎回、いつ曲作りをして、レコーディングしているんだ、と言いたくなるスピード感で驚く。この音源ペースを08年からずっと死守しているのだから、恐れ入る。バンドが年1枚リリースを3年続けて疲弊した、という言葉を何度か耳にしたことがある。彼らはそれを6年間続けているのだ。その意味では音源とライヴを両輪に馬車馬のごとく駆け抜けてきたからこそ、簡単に手にできない巨大な果実を掴み取ったと言える。今回は前々作のミニアルバム『Through Clarity』からタッグを組んでいるDavid Bendethがミックスダウン、Ted Jensenがマスタリングを手がけている。そう、注目すべきは前2作のDavidプロデュースの経験を踏まえ、今回セルフプロデュースに切り替えたところだ。さらなるオリジナリティーを求めて、バンドが主導権を握る。そのcoldrainらしい決断はサウンドに明白に表れている。よりヘヴィでライヴ映えする即効性の高いリフやフレーズが散りばめられ、メンバー5人の生々しい息づかいが脳裏に浮かぶダイナミックな音像がぎっしり。いやぁ、これは過去最高に激しい作品だ。にもかかわらず、窒息するような重苦しさはなく、激しさの隙間から美メロがダダ漏れするサウンド構造は実にcoldrainらしい！ ド頭からエフェクトを施したMasatoの歌に意表を突かれる「Aware And Awake」、ブリッブリのリフの嵐にまさに“巻き込まれる”「Evolve」の破壊力には思わず口があんぐり開いてしまう。「March on」は秒針を刻むイントロと同期を効果的に配した緩急豊かな曲展開に惹かれるし、ラスト曲「House Of Cards」は鍵盤を用いた静謐かつロマンチックな楽曲で美しい限りだ。歌詞も“生き抜く”というキーワードが多く使われ、《日々全力でやってきたから　死ぬまでここで戦い続けることを誓う》（「Evolve」）、《頭を上げて突き進め　火の中を突き進め　人生が地獄のようだとしても　俺たちならやっていける》（「March On」）など決意表明的なリリックが目に止まり、こっちも背筋がシャキッと伸びる思いだ。攻め続けたバンドにしか生み出せない壮絶な景色が、今作には封じ込められている。
