【sleep warp】“あーやっぱりいいわ、このバンド”って思っていただけたら幸い

──約2年間の活動休止期間を経て、昨年の12月にアルバム『strange torchlight』を発表されたわけですが、活動休止の要因はどんなことだったのでしょうか？　それは解散という選択肢もあっての休止だったのですか？

タバタ「メンバー間がなぁなぁになっていたことと、ズレてしまった方向性を修正できるなら、と活動を休止しました。直らなければそのまま解散かなと。だから、当時はかなり憤っていたし、新しいかたちで音楽活動してみようかなと思っていたのですが、結局他ではやる気が起きずじまいでした。そこに気付けたから、またやるきっかけにもなっています。」

──その後、再始動するわけですが、そのきっかけや理由はどういうものだったのでしょうか？

タバタ「サポートメンバーの結婚式でsleep warp全員で一緒に2曲だけ演奏することになって。その帰りメンバー3人で当たり前のようにsleep warpのこと話してて、そこからなんとなく雪解けムードに…。」

──久しぶりに3人で音を出した時の感触、手応え、感想はどんなものでしたか？

タバタ「他でやる気が起きないっていうことはここしか居場所がないんだなという感じで、演奏はめっきりでしたがそのダメなとこもぴったり息が合って気分良かったです。」

──活動休止を経て、メンバー自身、バンド自体にどんな変化がありましたか？

タバタ「やりたいことを無理せず自然にやれるようになったかなと。あまり感情的にならずに話し合えるようになっています。」

──そして、全曲新曲というフルアルバム『strange torchlight』が制作されるのですが、どんなビジョンを持って制作作業に入ったのでしょうか？

タバタ「これは毎回思っていることなのですが、流されずいつまでも聴ける作品を作りたいと思っていました。」

──やはり楽曲は休止していた期間に作りためていたものになるのですか？

タバタ「結局、活動休止期間に作ったものがほとんどですね。自分で“新しいことをやる”と言いながら、頭の中で鳴っているメロを歌ってたのは結局rumiだったという。ここ数年は激しい音楽が苦手になっているのと、音の重なりの美しさを最大限に活かした音作りを心がけています。」

──本作に限らずsleep warpの楽曲はファンタジックな空気をまとい、緩やかで伸びやかな飛翔感や、温かい包容力を持つ音像が特徴的ですが、曲作りやアレンジを行なう際に意識していることはありますか？

タバタ「sleep warpを始めてからそういう印象を持たれるようになったので、3人で意識してたことはないんですよ。3人のつながりが結果そういうサウンドを生み出すことになっていると思います。意識すると、あざとい感じになりそうなので、あえて何も意識してないですね。」

──sleep warpの楽曲はチェロが音の広がりを作るのに大きな役割を担っていますが、やはり曲を作る時から鳴っているのでしょうか？

タバタ「もともとは以前の作品で、2曲だけ弾いてもらうことになってレコーディングしたら異常なハマり具合で“なんで早く気付かなかったんだ”って後悔。ずっと一緒にやっていきたいと思い、今は作品作りから一緒にやってるので創作の時点から頭に鳴っています。」

──では、本作でのトライやチャレンジなど、収録曲の中で思い入れ深い曲、印象深い曲を挙げると？

タバタ「どれも印象深いですが、あえて選ぶなら「8月のモノクローム」。これだけ活動休止前に作った曲で、“もう終わってくなぁ、このバンド”って頃に作ったんです。その後、デモ録りで最後の歌詞が《どこにも無い音を歌ったんだ ずっと》っていう言葉だったので驚いたのを覚えてます。本番のレコーディング前に歌詞を書き直すと言い出したんですが、ここだけは絶対に変えるなと伝えました。」

──本作を発表し、約3カ月が経ちますが、どんなアルバムが作れた実感がありますか？　また、これからのsleep warpにとってどんなアルバムになってきていますか？

タバタ「個人的には毎回最高なんですが、今回は特にアレンジ面に関して自身の成長を感じれたと思います。成長してないなら次は作らないですけれど。」

──希望的観測も含めて、ここからsleep warpをどんなバンドにしていきたいと考えていますか？

タバタ「聴いてくれる人の感情にそっと寄り添っていてくれれば嬉しいです。たまに引っ張り出して聴いて、“あーやっぱりいいわ、このバンド”って思っていただけたら幸いです。」
