黒夢ではなく、黒夢のコピーバンドでもない！The Black Eyes of Dreamless Deathmaskがベールを脱ぐ！

9月6日、Zepp NagoyaにてThe Black Eyes of Dreamless Deathmaskという耳慣れぬ名前のバンドによる、一夜限りのライヴが行なわれた。

題して『KILLING URGE』。夢無きデスマスクの黒い眼、とでもいった意味合いのバンド名と、9月6日、すなわち“クロの日”と読むことができるその日付を理由に、公演開催が発表された時点から当然のごとく誰もが“あの2人”がステージ上に登場することを想定していたはずだが、実際に事前公表されていたのはこのバンド名と日付のみで、プラチナ・チケットを手に入れた幸運なツワモノたちは、公演趣旨やメンバーの顔ぶれすらも一切知らされることのないまま当日を迎えることになった。唯一、主催者側から事前にアナウンスされていたのは「あるバンドの最新曲が披露されるライヴではない」という、これまた思わせぶりかつ謎めいた言葉だけだだった。

開演予定の17時半から25分ほどを経過した頃、充分すぎるほどに焦らされた群衆で埋め尽くされた場内が暗転。ステージ上、配置についた5人の男たちがオープニング映像に導かれながら、まず演奏し始めたのは「Missing Glory（狂人）」だった。正面を網で覆われたその光景と、黒ずくめのメンバーたち、そして血まみれの包帯で両手を巻かれたフロントマンのたたずまいは、明らかに昨春に行なわれた黒夢の『地獄ノ三夜』を彷彿とさせるものだった。

そう、そのステージの中央に立っていたのは間違いなく清春だった。そしてもちろん、ステージの下手側には重低音を轟かせる“彼”の姿があり、“5人編成”という言葉からすべてのファンが連想するはずのメンバーたちが、そこに顔を揃えていた。

ライヴ中、清春はあくまで歌唱と世界観体現に集中し、ときおりオーディエンスを煽ることはあっても、いわゆるMCらしいMCというのは皆無に等しかった。アンコール時には『地獄ノ三夜』モードをやや逸脱しながらの選曲とステージングになったが、それでも近年の復活後の楽曲やポップなヒット曲の類が披露されることは一切なかったし、客席に向かって何かを語り掛けることもなかった。演奏終了後に今後の活動予定について公表されることもなかったし、今回、敢えてThe Black Eyes of Dreamless Deathmaskと名乗った理由についても結局は不明なまま、この夜のライヴは「親愛なるDEATHMASK」で幕を閉じた。清春が「黒夢でした！」と挨拶することも一切なかった。むしろこの曲の冒頭で「The Black Eyes of Dreamless Deathmask！」と叫んでいたことが印象的だった。

ライヴが終了した現在でも、今後この名義でのライヴが行なわれる可能性があるのか否かはわからない。ただ、これは筆者による勝手な憶測でしかないのだが、ファンであれば誰もが黒夢が何かをするはずだと予測するはずのこの日に、敢えて彼らがこうして異なった名前でのライヴを行なうことにしたのは、「ライヴ・バンドとして必要以上に長い“眠り”には就きたくないが、黒夢としてステージに立つからには新曲をプレイしたい」という考えからだったのではないだろうか。そうした意味においては、黒夢はこうした“ある種の楽曲群を封印したライヴ”を実践するうえでの新たなフォーマットを手に入れた、という見方も可能かもしれない。

終演後、そんなことを思いながら楽屋に清春を訪ねると、彼は一言、「これは黒夢ではなく、しかも黒夢のコピーバンドでもない」と語った。その発言の真意を追及するまでには至らなかったが、そこは読者の一人ひとりに解釈を委ねたいところだ。

一夜限りのライヴをこうして終えた今、The Black Eyes of Dreamless Deathmask始動の意図についても、黒夢の今後の動向に関しても、完全に謎のままではある。が、とにかく通常のツアーの流れなどでは味わえない刺激をはらんだライヴを、満員のオーディエンスは堪能することになった。通常ならばこうした局面においては「今後の動向に注目したいところだ」と締めるべきなのだろうが、いつ、何が起きるかわからないのが彼ら。とにかく油断せずにおきたいものである。
