【五月女五月】エネルギーを全部出して死ぬ。出し惜しみしないって意味で

「最近、僕が思ってるのは、“生命力”というか。人間が本来持ってるパワーを表現したいだけなのかなって。だから、ウチのメンバーはわりと本気でライヴ中死のうとしてて…（笑）。エネルギーを全部出して死ぬ、出し惜しみしないって意味で。」

──“死のうとしてて…”とサラッと言ってのける関田 諒（Gu&Vo）の大胆さに、インタビュー序盤からドキッとさせられる。しかし、そんな表現が頷けてしまうほど、彼らのパフォーマンスは音源で聴いても壮絶だ。荒々しい爆音の中で時に叫び、またある時には哀しみか、儚さか…心の琴線を激しく振るわせるメロディーを歌い上げる。2ndミニアルバム『清濁併せ呑む』でも展開したあまりに劇的な音世界は、まさに自らの思いの丈を全て出し尽くさんとしているかのようにも感じるほど。

「これも、僕、他人に指摘されるまで気付かなかったんですけど…。僕としては普通に歌ってるつもりだったんですけど、“それ、歌じゃないよ”っていう。“それ、語りじゃない？”みたいに言われて、初めて “あぁ、そうなんだ!? ”って。それはメロディーを付けることを知らなかったっていうのと、“音楽をやってる”って感覚がある意味ないというか。僕の中では、音楽の教科書とか理論はなくて。」

──「人間とバンドやってます」は、関田の語りがヒリヒリとした緊張感を醸し出す。「パーフェクトな世界」も関田の独唱で幕を開け、その激情の言葉と演奏が真っ向からぶつかり合って一体の音像を奏でる。いわゆる歌モノは綺麗なメロディーがなければいけないなどといった、普通に考えると当たり前な音楽の定型は五月女五月の音楽に存在しない。彼らの音楽にあるのはそんな自由な発想力と、冒頭に関田が言った“生命力”。そう言えば、《生きてることが不安でどうする 死んだほうが怖いぜ》と、前作のタイトル曲「地獄変」でも彼らは歌っていた。何が何でも生きろ！　そんな前向きすぎるメッセージも、五月女五月の音楽からは汲み取れるかもしれない。

「うん、そうかもしれないですね。僕らたぶん、めちゃくちゃポジティブです。“光”と”闇”とか、“善”と“悪”とか…そういう表と裏みたいなものを自分の中で勝手に分けてもがいてるのが人間なのかな、“生きる”ってことなのかなって。で、それがまさに“清濁合わせ呑む”っていうことなんですよね。」
