今年は台風が多かったなあと、しみじみ思う5曲

今年を振り返るのはまだ少し早いですが、台風が多かったなぁ、という印象を受けます。えっ、また来るの？　しかも超大型！というニュースを聞くたびにビクビクしてました。通勤通学もそうですが、音楽イベントも中止になったりと、人間は自然の前では本当に無力です。それで今回は台風にまつわる曲がないかなと、いろいろ考えたのですが、台風縛りだと少々無理が出てくるので、台風を彷彿させる、台風のイメージが似合う楽曲というかたちで、勝手に拡大解釈して選んでみました。

■1. 「NO WAY」（’06）／10-FEET

10-FEETのニューアルバム『Fin』が自身最高のオリコンランキング2位を獲得！　内容もミクスチャーロックから歌ものナンバーまで本当に素晴らしい楽曲ばかり。そして、10-FEETと言えば、バンド主催の記念すべき第一回目の『京都大作戦』（07年）が台風により中止を余儀なくされ、今年に関しては雷雨で2時間イベントが中断する危機を乗り越えたりと、何かと大変な目に遭っている。ここで取り上げるのは最新作ではなく、4thアルバム『TWISTER』のオープニングを飾る曲だ。“竜巻”“ひねくれ者”というアルバム名もどこか荒々しいイメージを喚起させるし、作品的にも多様な音楽要素を混ぜ合わせ、10-FEETらしさが色濃く出てきた音源だ。この曲もガムシャラな熱さに焚き付けられる好ナンバー。

■2.「台風の歌」（’90） ／プリンセス プリンセス

セルフタイトルを冠した5thアルバムに収録されている一曲。本作からは先行シングルカットで「ジュリアン」という、この季節にピッタリの名バラードが収録されてます。が、ここでは曲名もまんまの楽曲があるので、取り上げないわけにはいきません。歌詞にも“台風”“嵐”という言葉も出てくるのですが、それにも負けずに生きてやれ！というタフな感情を綴った内容も何とも力強い。ミドルテンポの曲調ですが、ホーンを導入したゴージャスなサウンドに仕上がっており、内側からエネルギーが沸き上がってきます。

■3.「愛より青い海」（’91）／上々颱風

バンド名に“タイフーン”というワードが入っているということで（苦しいですが）…ここでは上々颱風（シャンシャンタイフーン）を紹介したい。三線バンジャーをベースにさまざまな音楽を取り入れ、“無国籍音楽”を標榜しているだけあり、豊潤なサウンドで国内外で人気を博した。この曲も代表曲のひとつで、耳にしたことがある人も多いかもしれない。歌詞も素晴しく、《ただひとつの愛を　歌うために生まれた》のラインにはグッとくるものがある。個人的にはMONGOL800の「小さな恋のうた」に通じる歌詞の世界観だ。ハイトーンの女性ヴォーカルはどこまでもやさしく響き、いつまでも心に残り続ける。ぜひ聴いてみてください。

■4.「Crying In The Rain」（’87） ／WHITESNAKE

彼らの大ヒット作にして、大名盤7thアルバム『白蛇の紋章〜サーペンス・アルバス』（87年発表）も今年で30周年のアニバーサリーイヤーを迎える。日本盤でも最新リマスター盤が出たこともあり、本作の中でも激情の嵐吹き荒れるこのナンバーを選んでみた。歌詞の内容は失恋をテーマにしていると思われ、《空は晴れているけれど　俺の心は雨で濡れている》というラインが切なく迫って来る。ドラマチックの極致と言える緩急と起伏に富んだ展開は、ある意味台風というシチュエーションにマッチした楽曲。中盤すぎの怒濤のインストパートには魂が震える。まさに台風の渦中にいるような気分に襲われる。

■5.「Refuse/Resist」（’93） ／SEPULTURA

ブラジル発のトライバルなラウド／ヘヴィ・ミュージックで一世を風靡した彼らの5thアルバム『CHAOS A.D.』も今年最新リマスター盤で登場。表題通り、ケイオスなグルーブ感たっぷりに攻め込んでくる冒頭曲がこれ。民族楽器を多用し、バンド自身のルーツに根差したサウンドはオリジナリティー極まる熱気を運んでくれる。この曲も台風にベストマッチするカオティックな音像と言っていい。首がもげるほどヘドバンして、我を忘れてほしい大名曲だ。
