UNLIMITS 、なんで分厚く殻を張り合ってしまうんだろう

　2002年の結成以来、初のシングルとなった「ハルカカナタ」。これまで以上に自らの音楽を広めたいと強く願った意欲作について訊く！

──当初、アルバム『トランキライザー』に収録する予定で。

清水 そうですね。全曲録り終わった後に聴いてみると「ハルカカナタ」が頭ひとつ飛び出ていたんで、これは後々のためにとっておこうと。世に出すべき時がやっと来て、それが私たちにとっては初めてのシングルだったという。

──以前から、シングルで音楽を発信する自分たちを想像していたりはしたのですか？

郡島 なかったです。曲数が限られているから、伝え方が難しいですし…

清水 私は逆にもっとスルッと出せるんじゃないかって。いつかは出したかったし、インディーズの頃に話にも挙がったんですけど、なかなか発表する機会もなくて。でも、「ハルカカナタ」は“シングルでいける！”って満場一致でしたね。昔よりも多くの人に聴いてもらいたいっていう心がかなり芽生えて、それがすごい反映されているおかげかなって思います。

──「ハルカカナタ」は、都会に住む人々が描かれている歌詞だと感じました。一見、冷めきってしまったように見えるけど、本当は誰もが内にたぎる熱を持っている。ただ、それがお互い見えないでいるんですよね。

郡島 その通りです。なんで分厚く殻を張り合ってしまうんだろうってもどかしくて…理想と現実で“本当はこんなんじゃない”みたいな想いは、誰でも持ってるものじゃないですか。嬉しいことも、嫌なことも、今思っていることを吐き出せたらいいんですけど、都会という環境に染まってしまうと、外側から人間らしさの核がカチカチになって“他人は他人”って自分の殻に閉じこもってしまう。こんなにたくさんの人であふれているのにどこか寂しいんですよね。

清水 サウンド的には、凛として立っている芯の強さがあって。あと、ベースのジマ（石島）さんと初めてユニゾンしてます。ライヴで歌うのが気持ち良いですね。

郡島 ただ、ジマさんがちゃんと歌ってくれるかどうか…

──（笑）。眠れない夜だからこそ物思いにふける2曲目の「夜風ドライブ」は、言葉と音のハマりが心地良いですね。

清水 これは言葉のリズムを結構考えました。ひとりで車に乗るのが好きで、わざと遠回りして帰ったりするんですけど、そういう時って自分と向き合うんですね。そこで出てきた想いを思い出しながら書いた曲です。自分を締め付けているものをスパッと外して、どこか遠くに行ってしまいたい。でも、そう思うこと自体が生きている意味でもあったり…って頭の中で想いが巡るんだけど、最後には《新しいドアの向こう側へ》って希望を見てる。こういう歌詞は昔だったら書けなかったですね。

──その最後があるから、ドライブから戻ってきてすっきりしている感じがありますよね。

清水 でも、《弱虫な僕は生まれ変われるの？》って不安が消え去ったわけじゃない。それでも、ドアを開けて行こうとする、自分らしい歌詞が書けたなって思いました。

──そして、通常盤にはツアーファイナルのライヴ音源を3曲収録と内容盛りだくさんですね。

清水 後で聴いてびっくりしたぐらいお客さんの歓声が大きくて。けっして、編集で入れたわけではないです（笑）。ライヴでシンガロングしてもらったのも初めてだったんですよ。今まで一回もやったことなくて、あそこでみんなが歌ってくれたことは感動でしたね。それがそのまま詰まっているので聴いてもらいたいです。
