Half-Life、ぶつかり合いから生まれる ドラマがある

　バンドが成長する過程で気付いた“ただの人”。現実という名のドラマから生み出された心揺さぶる作品『drama』が完成。

──今回のミニアルバム『drama』は、歌詞がすごく印象的で、どの曲も日常的で、絵が見えると思いました。

上里 今回は、より多くの人に共感してもらえるように意識しました。CDショップの試聴機で聴いた時、知らないバンドだけど買ってみようと思ってもらえるものに絶対したい！と。実は、以前は自分の詞を分からないヤツがダサいんだと思ってたんです。僕は天才だから理解されにくいんだ！って。でも、結果が伴わず、メンバーやスタッフともぶつかって、とことん打ちのめされて。そこでやっと気付いた。僕は天才なんかじゃなく、音楽が好きな“ただの人なんだ”と。そう思ったら、何でもやれるような気がしたし、すごく謙虚に支えてくれる人たちのことや些細なことでも大切にしたいと思えるようになって。

岡村 こいつ（上里）があまりにもウジウジしていて、ライヴの当日に、喧嘩したこともあったんですよ（笑）。

──「アオイ」には《青春ごっこ》という歌詞がありますね。

上里 まさに、ですね（笑）。タイトルは、自分のケツはまだまだ青かったということにも掛けているんで。

──焦りや苛立ちの中で悶々としながら、それでも夢を追いかける「夢追い人」は、フォークソングのテイストで。

上里 曲はアコギで作るので、最初はまさにどフォークでした。昭和感丸出しの曲だから、若い子に上手く刺さるか分からないけど…。バンドに限らず、夢を追いながら生活のために他の仕事をしている人は大勢いる。そういうヤツらを全力で応援する歌です。“フォーク”と言うと、「柿ピー」は弾き語りで入るところが、もっとフォークっぽいかも。

──「柿ピー」は、ドラムがちょっと変わっていますね。

福島 ツインドラムにして重ねていて、すごくこだわりました。実は今回アレンジには、すごく時間がかかりました。1回極限までシンプルに削ぎ落としたことで、改めてバンドの音というものが見えてきたし。結果として、こだわりながらも前より聴きやすい音になったと思います。

岡村 洋志（上里）の作詞のスランプと、アレンジ面でのもやもやしたものが重なって、本番のレコーディングに入るまでは、かなり辛くて苦しかったですね。でも、バンドをやる意味を再確認できたところもあったから、今振り返ると、良いことだったんじゃないかと思います。

──喧嘩したりとか、バンド内でいろいろなことがあって。それでタイトルは“drama”ですか？

岡村 それもある（笑）。

上里 僕ら自身も含めて、誰の生活の中にでもドラマがあるということで“drama”にしました。

──あと、どの曲にも光がありますね。すごく辛く、苦しい状況の曲でも最後にちょっとした救いがあったり。

上里 例えば「after room」で歌ってるように、彼女が夕飯を作って待っていてくれたこととか。そんな些細なことでも、それが支えになることがある。どんな幸せでも、それを当たり前のこととは思ってほしくないですね。

──そう言えば、昨年のシングル「J-POP」がエンディングになったドラマ『モテキ』が、9月に映画公開されますが、映画とともに『drama』も注目を集めたらいいですね。

上里 でも、そろそろ“『モテキ』のHalf-Lifeだ”と言われるのは終わりにしたい。『モテキ』に負けたくないです！
