ザ・クロマニヨンズ、楽曲の持つインパクトを増幅させる映像作品集

　3カ月連続リリースの第三弾はミュージックビデオ・コレクション。スタジオで演奏しているシンプルなものから、凝ったセット、野外撮影、意表を突く編集、シュールな展開など、豊富なアイデアと彼らの音楽性にリンクした映像作品が楽しめる。


　今年4月リリースのシングルコレクション・アルバム『13PEBBLES～Single Collection～』、5月リリースのカップリングコレクション・アルバム『20FLAKES～Coupling Collection～』に続き、3カ月連続リリースの第三弾となる『16NUGGETS～Music Video Collection～』が登場。ザ・クロマニヨンズにとって初となるミュージックビデオ・コレクションだ。2006年の「タリホー」から12年の「炎」までのシングル曲のミュージックビデオ、1stアルバム収録の「土星にやさしく」、そして「グリセリン・クイーン」「人間マッハ」のライヴバージョン、さらにはTV-CMコレクション24本を収録した内容だ。

　記念すべきデビューシングル「タリホー」は、白バックで演奏するメンバー4人の姿をストレートにとらえた映像。何と言っても甲本ヒロト（Vo）の視線の強烈さ。これに勝るものはないだろう。さらに、時おり顔を見合わせて笑顔を浮かべるなど、素に近い彼らをうかがわせる。ザ・クロマニヨンズの原点がここにある。「紙飛行機」は演奏シーンに加え、子役の男の子が紙飛行機を追いかけて走るシーンがセピア調の色彩とともに切ない。「ギリギリガガンガン」はゴーカート場での撮影。レーシングスーツで演奏し、そのあと実際にゴーカートを走らせてレースを行なうなど、楽しさ満載だ。レースクイーン、表彰台やシャンパンも用意され、撮影を心から楽しんでいるメンバーの表情がしっかりととらえられている。

　「エイトビート」は横一列に並んだメンバーのシルエットと精悍な顔つきが映像に深みを残す。何気ない演奏シーンだけでも強い説得力を持っていることが証明されている。「スピードとナイフ」では回るステージに乗って演奏。モータウン風のベースラインがダンサブルで強いインパクトを残す。ちなみにステージデザインは、青いラインに赤い丸のモッズマークだ。「グリセリン・クイーン」は夜の野外。演奏している路上だけが照明に照らされ、映画の一場面のような光景が映し出される。真島昌利（Gu）は珍しくストラトキャスターを弾いていて、ライヴでもこの曲だけはストラトを使用する。

　「オートバイと皮ジャンパーとカレー」はバイクの疾走シーンと、流れる街並みの映像をバックに演奏するメンバーが交互に登場。路上に歌詞の一節が時々登場するなど、遊び心も加わった映像だ。「流線型」はカントリー調の曲ということもあって、真島はアコースティックギター、小林勝はアコースティック・ベース、桐田勝治はスタンディングドラムで演奏。頭上から降り注ぐシャボン玉のひとつを追いかけてカメラがスタジオの外に出ていく不思議な展開にも注目。ちなみに1カメラで1テイクだったそうだ。「飛び乗れ!!ボニー!!」はウエスタン風のサウンドで、挟み込まれる影絵が鮮烈だ。

　「ナンバーワン野郎!」はスタジアムでの撮影。サッカーを楽しむメンバーの姿が微笑ましく、ゴールを決めてポーズをとる真島のキメ顔が見どころ。「雷雨決行」はシンプルにスタジオで撮影。これも飾り気のない演奏シーンのみなのだが、そのインパクトは大きい。「突撃ロック」はかなり意表を突いた作品。女子高生のバンドが歌い演奏していると思うと、年配の女性がお囃子のセットで演奏。すると、メンバーに切り替わって通常の演奏へとつながっていく。背景の強烈なライトで浮かび上がる4人の姿には異様な迫力がある。「炎」は夕暮れのシーンに始まり、夜の闇の中、サークル状の炎に包まれての演奏シーンが強いインパクトを残す。

　そして、「土星にやさしく」では、某24時間チャリティ番組に似ていなくもない設定になっているのがおかしい。渋谷から中継される高橋くん（クロマニヨンズの分身?）、土星で黄色いTシャツを着て演奏するメンバーと、シュールな組み合わせが笑いを誘う。「グリセリン・クイーン」は『MONDO ROCCIA』のツアーからの映像で、改めてメロディアスな楽曲の持つエネルギーが伝わってくる。「人間マッハ」は『YETI vs CROMAGNON』のツアーからの映像。鋭くもパワフルなロックンロールの底力を思い知らされる。

　最後にボーナストラックとして収録されているのは、24本のTV-CM。シングル、アルバム、DVDリリースのタイミングで制作されたものであり、これだけまとめて見る機会はめったにないだけに貴重なトラックと言えるだろう。

　演奏シーンを真っ直ぐに撮影したシンプル極まりない映像もあれば、コミカルな映像、野外ロケを楽しむ映像、さりげない部分にこだわりを見せる映像など、豊富なアイデアと限りなくロックなセンスが盛り込まれた作品ばかり。どれも、彼らの楽曲を分かりやすく伝えるという前提で作られていながら、楽曲の持つインパクトを増幅させてくれる映像作品群でもある。
