sadsがツアー最終公演で実証してみせた自らの強力無比さ

　去る6月14日に幕を開けたsadsのショート・ツアー『Evil 7 playground』が、7月7日、東京・恵比寿リキッドルームでの公演をもって着地点を迎えた。

　首都圏および京都での計7公演はすべてソールドアウトという大盛況となったが、それ以上に特筆しておくべきは、あらかじめ強力無比な状態にあったsadsというバンドの成り立ちとサウンドが、このわずかな公演数のなかでいっそうの進化／深化を経てきたことだろう。もちろんそれは未成熟なバンドが経ていく成長のプロセスとは一線を画するもの。いわばその特異さ、稀有さが、さらに際立ってきたということだ。

　この夜に演奏されたのは、今回のツアーで会場限定販売されてきた新作シングル『spin』に収められている3曲をはじめとする全24曲。演奏される楽曲の顔ぶれはツアー全編を通じてさほど大きくは変わってこなかったが、楽曲同士の連なりやメンバーたちの駆け引きにより誘発される化学変化は公演を重ねていくにつれて大きなものとなり、スリリングさを増していた。いわゆる近年のラウド・ロックとも、王道的なヘヴィ・メタルやヴィジュアル系とも明らかな差異のあるsadsのサウンドとスタイルは、まさに唯一無二のもの。なにしろK-A-Z（g）、GO（ds）、クボタケイスケ（b）によるテクニカルでアグレッシヴな演奏だけでも殺傷力充分なのに、あの清春がその轟音と絡み合いながら歌い、煽り、魅せるのだから、誰にも真似できるはずがない。清春自身がMCのなかで発していた「他はまったく関係ありません」という言葉もそのことを象徴していたし、「上を目指すんではなく前に進んでいくだけ」という発言からも、音楽シーンのトレンドとは無関係に突き進んでいくという覚悟がうかがえた。

　しかし残念ながら、sadsの次なるライヴや活動プランについては今のところいっさい明かされていない。改めて説明するまでもないはずだが、この7月19日には黒夢のロングツアー『BEFORE THE NEXT SLEEP』が開幕を迎えることになっており、しばらく清春はそちらに専念し、K-A-Zもサポート・メンバーとしてそこに同行することになっている。とはいえ今回のツアーは、誰よりも彼ら自身にとってsadsというバンドの強力さと稀有さについて再確認する機会となったはずだし、この夜もステージを去る間際に清春の口から発せられた「We are sads!」という叫びに、このバンドを繋ぐ信頼関係の絆の強さを感じさせられもした。表向きには停止しているかのような状態がしばらく続くことになるだろうが、我々の目には見えない次元でsadsは前進を続けていくに違いない。

　清春は去る2月9日、黒夢としてのメジャー・デビューから20周年を迎えているが、同時にこの7月7日という日付けはsadsにとって非常に縁の深いもの。このバンドが最初のシングルをリリースしたのは1999年のこの日であり、現在のラインナップでの最初のアルバム、『THE 7 DEADLY SINS』が発売されたのは2010年の同じ日のこと。つまりsadsはこの日を持ってデビュー15周年を迎え、現布陣として4周年を迎えたというわけだ。その記念すべき夜、超満員のフロアに向けて清春は「sadsとして新しいことをやりたい」という願望を抱いていることを告げていた。その“新しいこと”というのが何を意味するのかは定かではない。が、どんな場に出ていこうと自らの存在感を失うことがないこのバンドの実力と魅力は、たとえば旧来のファン層以外にも認知されて然るべきものだし、むしろ日本国外でこそ正当に評価される部分というのもあるのではないかという気さえする。そうした活動範囲の拡大といったものも今後の彼らには期待したいところだが、とにかく今は“次のライヴ”に関する情報の到着を待ちたいところだ。

　そして最後にもうひとつだけ。邦楽／洋楽といった垣根やジャンル感の違い、メンバーの素性や歴史などを理由に今のsadsに手を伸ばさずにいることは、音楽ファンとしてあまりに勿体ない行為だと言わざるを得ない。ロックに刺激や個性を求めている人たちならば、きっとここにひとつの答えを見つけることになるだろう。そう、今からでも決して遅すぎるということはないはずなのだ。
