Large House Satisfaction、この生々しさをもっと遠くまで

　前作『in the dark room』で体現した漆黒のブルースから一転、今作のテーマは“ラブソング”！　新境地に降り立ち、大舞台を前にした3人の視界に映る景色とは？

──これまで“ラブソング”という領域に踏み込まなかった理由と、なぜ今回のテーマとして選んだかについて教えていただきだいのですが。

要司 単純に腰が引けてたんですよね。“恋”とか“愛”っていうものに正面からぶつかることに抵抗があって。でも、そういう感情ってやっぱり一番心に響くものだし、アルバムの重要なところが“分かりやすさ”とか“ポップネス”だったので、スウィートなところを押し出さないと、もっと遠くまで届かないって気付いたんです。歌詞に関しても、『in the dark room』の時は“これは俺たちの色じゃないな”っていうこだわりが強かったんですけど、今回は素直に書けました。

──“遠くまで”という意識が生まれたのは、フェス系の大きなイベントに出演されたことがきっかけですか？

要司 そうですね。何千人というお客さんの前で演った時、やっぱりスッと入っていく曲だとレスポンスが良かったし、そういうところを意識しないと何も変わらないのかなって。ロック好きはもちろん聴いてほしいし、ロック好きじゃない人にも届く作品になったと思います。

──ライヴで初披露した時の反応はどうでしたか？

賢司 「トワイライト」は、今までやってきたことの延長線上にある音楽なので結構良かったんですけど、「Stand by you」は“こういうのもやるんだ”ってリアクションで（笑）。でも、歌詞にしろ、音にしろ、表現する方法が広がっただけで根本的なところは変わっていないです。

──「Stand by you」は前作の重厚でダーティなイメージと打って変わって、疾走感と爽快感があふれていますね。かつ、歌詞は「I’ll Be Your Mirror」（The Velvet Underground and Nico）を匂わせる。

要司 そう！　この曲が完成した時、“無償の愛”を表現したいと思ったんですよ。それで真っ先に「I’ll Be Your Mirror」が浮かんで、インスパイアじゃないけど意識はしましたね。

──言葉のチョイスだけでも振り切れた感覚がありますが、曲を表情豊かなものにしているのがリズム隊のグルーブかなと。

秀作 “研ぎ澄まされてきた”っていうのはあるかな。前作、前々作よりもっとポップさやキャッチーさを出したドラムを叩けていると思います。

賢司 「孤独の情熱」は、あまり意識してプレイしていないですね。もちろん考えるけど、1発目にドンとやる時はやっぱり自然に出てきちゃうし、そこから特に変えてもいないし。

秀作 僕の中にあったリズムを出しただけで。

賢司 カッコ良い（笑）。

要司 俺は、このふたりのベースとドラムが鳴っている状態で“ギター弾こう”ってあまり思わないんですよ。それぐらいのグルーブができているんで。

──「眩暈」では高野勲さんがキーボードを弾いていたり、「POISON」でアレックスたねこさん（惑星アブノーマル）のコーラスが入っていたりと、ゲストを迎えたことで作品がより鮮やかになったことが面白いですし、こういった楽曲が11月の渋谷CLUB QUATTROワンマンでどう化けるかも楽しみです。

秀作 ライヴはもう“ぶちかます！”ってだけです（笑）。

賢司 いい作品ができたと思うんで、ライヴでガッカリされないようにしたいですね。自分たちに負けないように、そこからまた一歩踏み出したステージにしたいです。
