【WHITE ASH】もっと音楽って自由でいいと気付いてほしい

　WHITE ASHがメジャー移籍後初であり、通算2枚目となるフルアルバム『Ciao,Fake Kings』を完成させた。批評性と音楽愛に満ちた、聴けば聴くほど、知れば知るほど楽しめる仕上がりである。のび太（Vo）の言葉からも、強い意志を感じた。

──何だか意味深なタイトルですけど…。

「そうなんです（笑）。僕、タイトルを付ける時に、頭文字に何がくるかなって直感で決めていて、今回は“C”からはじめようと。そこで、“C”からはじまる言葉でパッと思い付いたのが“Ciao”だったんです。挨拶じゃないですか。で、挨拶からはじまるフレーズで一番印象的だったのは、ニルヴァーナの「Smells Like Teen Spirit」の《ハロー、ハウ　ロウ？》なんですよね。あれを“Ciao”に置き換えた場合、《チャオ、チャウ　オウ？》になる感覚って分かります？（笑）」

──あ、語呂的にね（笑）。

「はい（笑）。で、“チャウ　オウ”って何だろうって考えたんです。“チャウ”っていうのは“違う”。“オウ”っていうのは“王様”。で、“違う王様＝偽物の王様＝Fake Kings”っていう。そこで“Ciao,Fake Kings”ってタイトルにすれば、ちゃんと意味を持たせられると思ったんです。いろんな分野において、実力がなくてもトップにいる人もいると思っていて、そういう人たちに対して、カッコ良いと思う音楽で真っ向勝負をして、自分たちが上にいくっていう、宣戦布告な意味を感じるから、ロックバンドっぽいなぁ！って（笑）。しかも、リード曲が「Casablanca」なんですけど、あとで調べたら、別名が“百合の女王”らしいんです。直感で思い付いたことが、実は意味があるって…持ってるなぁって（笑）。」

──すごい連想ゲームですね！　他にも気付くと“なるほど！”と思う要素が散りばめられていますよね？

「気付いた人に、そういうことか！って思ってもらえたらいいですね。音楽って継承していくものっていうか、根本的なオリジナルって存在しないと思うんです。だとしたら、自分たちが好きなもの、自分たちだからできるものを組み合わせて届けられたら、やる意義があるというか…。僕は自分たちの音楽だけじゃなく、音楽自体を聴いてほしいんですね。今レギュラーでやってるラジオでも、邦楽のロックは聴くけど、洋楽は分からないっていう人たちに、僕らの音楽がカッコ良いと思うなら、こういう洋楽は気に入ると思いますよって紹介したりしますし。」

──大きな特徴としては、シングルが入っていないですよね。

「世に出している作品として、シングルとかミニアルバムとか形態は違うけど、意識するところは変わらないっていう。だから、シングルを入れずに、全て新曲でアルバムを作るんですよね。一番分かりやすいじゃないですか、僕らの作品に対する考え方が。全てひとつの作品として作っていて、そこで完結しているから、ここにシングルを足すとちぐはぐしてしまうっていう。」

──でも、珍しいですよね。

「メーカー泣かせですよね（笑）。でも、普通にされているルーティーンに対する、単純な疑問があって。僕らはどの作品も最後の一枚になってもいいように曲を作るので、シングルもひとつの作品だって分かってほしいんですよ。」

──あと、歌詞で《踊る》っていう言葉が散りばめられているし、実際にグルービーな仕上がりになっていますけど、それもテーマのひとつだったりはしましたか？

「それは意識していますね。否定をするわけじゃないですけど、この曲でこういう振りをしてっていうのも、ルーティーンじゃないですか。そこで、僕らが意識したのがテンポなんですよ。まず「Number Ninety Nine」は、僕らなりの今の邦楽ロックシーンにおける、テンポのいい4つ打ちのロックなんです。それができますよって提示した上で、「Zodiac　Syndrome」や「Bacardi Avenue」や「Delayed」は、意識的にテンポを落としているんです。テンポが速いと一定の動きをしがちですけど、ゆっくりな曲ってそのグルーブに乗るしかないっていうか。僕はもっと音楽って自由でいいと気付いてほしいんですよね。みんなで同じ動きをすることで、一体感を味わえるのはいいことだと思うんです。でも、どのバンドでもみんなが同じ動きになるっていうか。そこをね、どうにか崩せないかなって。ゆっくりなテンポで乗れる曲を聴かせたら、ひとつの新しい体験になるんじゃないかなって思うんです。自然と体が動いちゃうな？とか。それを僕らは提示できたらいいなって。他の人たちがやっていることは、わざわざ自分がやる必要はないし、それが最終的に求められているものになるほうが意義があると思って。」

──でも、決して閉じた作品にはなっていないですよね。

「「(Y)our song」は、逆にオイ！　オイ！ってしやすかったり、肩車からのダイブみたいなことをしやすいように意識したんですよ（笑）。今の流れを無視しているわけじゃない、っていう。」

──みんなのことも見てるよって？

「そう、まったく置いてきぼりにはしないけど、僕らのやりたいこともやるよっていう。」

──すごく批評的ですよね！

「そう。求められているものも理解して、僕らがやりたいことも分かってもらえたらいいなと思って。より多くの人に聴いてもらいたいので。そういう狙いがありつつも、何も考えずに通して聴いてもらって、めっちゃいい曲が入ってるねってだけ思ってもらえればいいですね。みんなが聴けるような要素を僕らは持っていると思うので。」
