SURFACE、出会いから20年以上を経て再始動！

1998年にシングル「それじゃあバイバイ」でメジャーデビューし、ドラマ『ショムニ』の人気を追い風にデビューから華やかに音楽シーンに登場したSURFACEは、エッジの効いたポップロックと洒落っ気のある歌詞の魅力と相俟って人気を博しながら2010年、解散。椎名慶治はソロアーティストとして、永谷喬夫は作曲家として、別々の道を歩いてきた。そんな彼らが2018年にデビュー20周年を迎える。

高校で出会い、結成したSURFACE。出会いから解散を決めるまで実に17年という年月を、膝を突き合わせ楽曲制作とライブとに明け暮れて来た2人だ。近すぎる関係は遠慮ないワガママを生み、互いを遠ざけてきたことと思う。しかし道を違えて一人きりで歩いてきた道程で、ふたりは再会を果たす。出会いから17年での別れ。出会いから20数年を経ての再会。ひとりになったことで気付いたこと。ひとりだからこそ想うこと。近すぎるが故に遠ざかった彼らは、近すぎた時間が知らず育んできた絆を再び繋ぐ。

再始動。節目だからそうしようと思ったわけではないと言う椎名。様々な感情と椎名慶治という存在と向かい見つめ直すことが出来たという永谷。決して素直とは言えないふたりだが、再び視線を合わせ、気概を持って音楽を生み出すことを高らかに宣言した。「さぁ」。ここから。月日を重ね、20年ものあいだ音楽漬けの彼らでなければ放てない新たな息吹を楽しみにしたい。

「3年前、ふとしたキッカケで2人が再会し、過去には言葉にしなかったであろう事も赤裸々に語り合う時間がありました。それからゆっくりとではありますが、確実に自分達が描くビジョンが重なり合ったんだと思ってます。だから、節目に復活しようと前々から決めていたわけじゃなく、本当に磁石のように引き合う力が強くなったのが今で。自分達のワガママで終わらせたバンドを、今度は自分達のワガママでRe:STARTさせる。本当に面倒な2人だなって自分でも理解してます。このメッセージが『あの日の僕等2人の決断を許してないアナタへ』ちゃんと届いてくれてればと願ってます。『僕の手を握れ 一緒に見ないかい 決して楽じゃないが最高の世界』」

「皆さま、お久しぶりです！解散から8年が過ぎました。そして、もうすぐデビューしてから20年が経とうとしています。あれから、作曲家として、演奏家として、いろいろな立場や経験を積んできました。最初の12年でできたこと、できなかったこと、様々な感情、そして椎名慶治という存在。。。20年というタイミングで改めて向き合い見つめ直す機会をいただきました。体も大きくなりましたが、その分、心も成長している気がします。少し大人になったSURFACEを、僕を、応援していただけるとありがたいです。皆さまにお会いできることを楽しみにしています」
