布袋寅泰、ロンドンにて圧巻のプレイを披露

布袋寅泰が10月21日、ロンドン中心部にあるイズリントン・アッセンブリー・ホールにてライブを行なった。

彼が英国へ移住して丸3年が経ち、海外でのライブはこれまでも数多く行なわれてきたが、英欧日CD同時発売、更に全世界配信され、日本ではオリコン総合洋楽アルバムウィークリーチャート2位を獲得としたインターナショナルアルバム『Strangers』発売記念とも言える特別なステージだ。

ショウは21時オン・タイムにスタート。バンド・メンバーはベースのNokoとドラムスのクリフ・ヒューイット（いずれもアポロ440）、そこにハモンドの名手アンディ・ウォレス（ロン・ウッド、ロジャー・ウォーターズ）が加わった鉄壁の布陣だ。幻想的なライティングの中バンドが登場し、最後には布袋のシルエットが浮かびあがる。日本であれば大歓声が巻き起こるところだが、ここはロンドン。ステージとフロアが互いの様子をうかがうような独特の緊張感が会場に満ちていた。自身も語っているように、彼の地での布袋は「新人」なのだ。しかし、オープニング・チューン「Medusa」の演奏が始まるやいなや会場の熱量が可視化されたようにグンッと上昇。布袋の指先から放たれる音は確信に満ちたものだ。

次曲「New Chemical」の超絶ギター・プレイで聴衆を驚愕させたのち、とても流暢な英語でのMC。英国での発売を含むインターナショナルアルバム『Strangers』がリリースされたこと、また本作収録曲のすべてを今夜プレイすることを宣言し喝采を浴びた。

途中、リーフのリード・シンガー、ゲイリー・ストリンガーが招かれ、布袋×イギー・ポップのコラボレート曲「How the Cookie Crumbles」など3曲を披露。圧巻だったのが中盤でプレイされた「Battle Without Honor or Humanity」。同曲は英国でもCMやスポーツ・チャンネルに起用されており世界的認知度を誇る。ロンドンのオーディエンスがヘッド・バンギングで応酬する。

終盤にはアルバム『Strangers』へも参加している女性シンガー、シェイ・シーガーが登場し「Kill or Kiss」「Texas Groove」の2曲をプレイ。会場は熱狂的な盛り上がりを見せた。アンコールでは「Place Your Hands」「Born To Be Wild」とカバー曲でたたみかけた最後に（まさかの！）「Russian Roulette」。おそらく同曲を初めて耳にするであろうロンドンっ子たちも布袋流のロックンロールに大はしゃぎでジャンプを繰り返していた。

アルバム『Strangers』リリース記念ライブは成功だった。布袋は世界へ踏み出した「第一戦」で勝利を収めたのだ。満足そうな表情と最高の笑顔でステージをあとにする布袋の姿が印象的だった。なおアルバム『Strangers』は日本盤限定トラックが追加され、UK/EU盤とは異なる曲順で –Japan Edition- がリリースされている。
