佐野元春、セルフカバーアルバム『自由の岸辺』を5月23日に発売

2017年7月にリリースされたアルバム『マニジュ』で新境地を見せた佐野元春が、早くもニューアルバム『自由の岸辺』をリリースする。同アルバムは2011年1月に発表された『月と専制君主』に続くセルフカバーアルバム。佐野自身でこれまでの楽曲から11曲を厳選し、編曲に大胆な改変を施し新たな楽曲として蘇らせている。

レコーディングには前作のセルフカバーアルバムと同じセッション・メンバーである古田たかし（dr）、井上富雄（B）、Dr.kyOn（key）、長田 進（G）らが参加。いずれも佐野が長年親交を共にしてきたミュージシャンだ。古田たかし、井上富雄によるコンビネーションが安定感のあるリズムを刻み、Dr.kyOnのピアノがファンキーに転がる。長田進のギターがブルージーに唸り、佐野自身も何曲かでソロ演奏を披露。彼らのプレイヤビリティーを知り尽くした佐野が、それぞれのミュージシャンのポテンシャルを最大限に引き出した。

アルバムは全編に渡ってフォーク、ブルース、ニューオリンズ、ジャズ、カリビアン、レゲなど多彩なビートが採用されている。ここでの佐野は、卓越したメロディ・メーカーであるだけでなく、言葉を際立たせる編曲家としても限りない創造力を発揮。セルフカバーアルバムではあるが、そこに懐古的な要素はなく、現在進行形のソングライターによる新作アルバムが完成した。それぞれの楽曲が持つ音の豊富さに彩られて、佐野元春はジャック・ブレルのように愛を歌い、カエターノ・ヴェローゾのように真実を奏でる。どの曲を採っても、詩的表現の中に気取りのないユーモアと批評精神を滲ませ、時が経っても古臭さを感じさせない。むしろ成熟した大人の芳醇さに包まれ、説得力あるメッセージとして現代の聴き手に響く。

CDのマスタリングはラーセン・マスタリングのチーフ・エンジニア、ギャビン・ラーセン、アナログ・カッティングは、キャピタル・マスタリングのベテラン・エンジニア、Ron McMaster（ロン・マクマスター）が担当。ネイキッドで、美しく、ウィットに富み、大胆不敵。そんなバンド・サウンドが心地いい佐野元春 & THE HOBO KING BANDのアルバム『自由の岸辺』はCD、アナログ、配信の3形態で5月23日にリリースされる。
