PENICILLIN、完全予約受注生産作「Utopia」「Euphoria」を2ヶ月連続で発売。

昨年、PENICILLINは「pulse」「impulse」と題した2枚のパンフレットCDを、完全予約受注生産という形で販売した。最初に発令された緊急事態宣言の余波もあり、当時、CD店に足を運ぶのが困難な人たちのための措置として、手元にPENICILLINの作品を残したい人たちすべての元へ確実に届く手段として先の手法が用いられた。そして今も、世の中の情勢にさほど変化が見られないことから、PENICILLINの2021年の作品は、昨年同様の形態で「Utopia」、「Euphoria」と題した2枚のパンフレットCDを、２カ月連続で発売する。
この2021年の第一弾作品「Utopia」の受注期間は、7月31日(土)から8月12日(木)まで。今回、２種類のType;AとType;Bという形態に分かれていて、「パライゾ」「black buddy」「ファイブ」の3曲に加えBonus Trackとして「border line (Plugless ver.）」が収録されているType;Aと、「パライゾ」「black buddy」「ファイブ」の3曲にパンフレットの中にメンバーの3人の個別のインタビューが収録されているType;Bがあるので非常に楽しみだ。

　雄叫びのようなギター音による幕開けが強烈なインパクトを放つ「パライゾ」は、重厚かつ雄大な世界観を描き出すメッセージ性の強いパワーソング。千聖いわく「８分の６拍子の、曲が始まった瞬間から心つかむ衝動を与える」ハードでヘヴィな楽曲。HAKUEIが、「失楽園」を題材に書いた歌詞も気になる。
　「black buddy」は、軽快に駆けるスカパンクな演奏と騒ぐ気持ちを綴った歌詞が重なり合った、ライブに熱狂を描く熱情ソング。O-JIROも「歌詞が衝撃的」と語っているように、そこにはHAKUEIの私生活の模様が描き出されている。
　ザクザクとしたヘウィなギターサウンドを軸に据えた「ファイブ」は、ライブで爆上がりしていける楽曲だ。千聖も、「イントロは重くゴリゴリとしたPENICILLINらしいヘヴィなスタイルで始まりながら、途中から急に軽快なギターサウンドになったりと、ヘヴィさと軽快な面とを交錯させてゆくところが面白さ」と語るように、音の仕上がりを楽しみにしていて欲しい。この曲の歌詞にも、HAKUEIの日常が描きだされている。
Bonus Trackの「border line(Plugless ver.)」は、熱情する激しい楽曲を、ピアノとHAKUEIの歌のみによる胸揺さぶるバラード曲にアレンジ。HAKUEIいわく「PENICILLIN流のTHE FIRSK TAKEソング」になっている。

CDとライブで一つの楽曲が完成すると語るPENICILLIN。まだ発表されているライブは少ないが、ライブにて披露されるのが待ち遠しい。そして、第二弾『Euphoria』も異なるアプローチで私たちを驚かせてくれることだろう。
