【OverTheDogs】全ての事柄に裏と表がある

　独特の間合いで聴き手の心に入ってくるOverTheDogsの音楽。頭を空っぽにして楽しみ、そして最後には充実感が得られる本作『トイウ、モノガ、アルナラ』について訊いた。

──今作はどんなものを作ろうと考えていましたか？

恒吉 “前作を超えよう”っていうのが毎回のテーマとしてあります。それで、今回はサウンドは攻撃的なものにしたくて、ガンガン攻めの姿勢でアップテンポな曲を多めにしました。

──確かにライヴを見据えた、盛り上がる曲ばかりですね。

佐藤 男の子が食い付いてくれると嬉しいですね。レコーディング中も結構ノリノリで弾いて、ヘッドホンが取れちゃって（笑）。ライヴばりに汗をかきました。すでにベースとドラムだけでガンと突っ走っていけるところに上モノが乗って、さらに疾走感が出ましたね。

星 音が鳴った瞬間に“来た！”って思えるような、聴いただけでドキドキする感じを表現したくて、そういうフレーズを作っていくのが楽しかったですね。

樋口 ミニアルバムってどう作り込んでいけばいいのか自分の中でイメージしづらかったんですけど、緩急が出やすくて、作ってみると面白い作品に仕上がりました。

──ちなみに一番古い曲というのは？

恒吉 「愛」ですね。星くんが加入した時だから2008年ぐらいからある曲です。で、最近の曲も合わせて聴いてたんですけど、言ってることは何も変わってねぇなって。変わっていきたいんだけど、根本が変わっちゃいけない。

──「愛」は言葉が飛び込んで来るというか、力強いですよね。

恒吉 それこそ愛の歌なんて何百回、何十万回と歌われてきてるんですけど、どうやったら人の心に入っていくのかなっていうのを考えました。僕の結論としては、カッコ良い言葉ってあんまり入っていかないのかなって思ったんで、タイトルもわざとストレートに“愛”にして。曲を作る時にどこを大事にするか…カッコ良さをとるのか、心に残るメッセージをとるのかってことを考えて、僕は言葉を伝えるように書いています。

──「儚々な」の《愛情なんて愚かで意味がないよ》という言葉の裏に隠された、“…それでも”という矛盾が見え隠れしているのが人間味あふれる表現だなと。

恒吉 「愛」は愛の善悪を歌ってるんですけど、「儚々な」は“…それでも”って部分もあるんだけど、“愛は愚かで脆い”という負の視点から歌った愛のかたちなんです。切り口が一カ所しかないので、最初は他の曲とぶつかるかなって心配したんですけど、逆にこれを入れたことでまとまったのかなって。

──サウンド的に興味が沸いたのは「オ・ワールド・インスピレーション」でした。

恒吉 プロデューサーの江口 亮さんとイメージを擦り合せていく中で、お互いに譲れない部分を尊重した結果、いろんな要素が混ざりました。だから、印象に残る良い違和感があるというか。すごく不思議な感じですよね。

樋口 世界が終わる日に流れる音楽みたいな。

──主観と客観が入り混じった歌詞も特徴的だと思ったのですが。

恒吉 冷静に考えて、世界が終わる時にみんな笑顔だったら怖くないですか？ でも、それが絵本にしてみるとポップになるんですよね。“絵本＝平和”ってイメージからかもしれないんですけど…で、何で曲をポップにしたかっていうと、世界が終わる時に笑顔で終わっていくっていうのは端から見れば恐ろしいことでもあるけど、当事者にしてみたらすごく幸せなことだということ。全ての事柄に裏と表があって、僕の歌も“愛を信じてみよう、でも疑ってみよう”とか。答えがないんですよね。
