【Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas】新体制で作り上げたライヴ感爆発の一枚！

　待望のニューシングル「Rave-up Tonight」は、ベーシスト交代後の新体制の勢いを封じ込めた熱情作で、彼らの本領が遺憾なく発揮されている。

「もはや国産のラウド／ヘヴィミュージックにエレクトロが入っているのは当たり前。その当たり前を常態化させたのは、Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas（以下ラスベガス）の存在によるところが大きい。今や右を見ても左を見ても、その手のバンドであふれ返っている。もちろんそこに需要があるから、供給は増えるわけで、時代の欲求と言えなくもない。ただ、似たような要素を持つサウンドが横一列に並んだ時、バンドの真価はより浮き彫りになってくる。皮肉ではあるが、エレクトロを標準装備したアプローチが増えれば増えるほど、ラスベガスの技量とセンスはより一層強い光を放っている。あるいは、模倣できないオンリーワンの個性として堂々と君臨しているのだ。改めて、とんでもない若手が登場したものだと噛み締めずにはいられない。」

「デビュー作『Dance&Scream』の直球すぎる表題には面食らったが、同時にこれほど彼らの音楽を的確に捉えた言葉も見当たらない。前述作のオープニングナンバー「Burn the Disco Floor with Your"2-step"!!」の曲名通り、フロアに２ステップを踏むキッズがあふれる様は壮観だった。当時、メンバーの平均年齢19歳という若さ漲るフレッシュな勢いはライヴでも大爆発し、あっと言う間にシーンにその名を轟かせた。アニメのタイアップなどはあったが、メディアにほとんど露出せず、音源とライヴでファン層をどんどん広げ、現在は2000人以上のキャパを即日ソールドアウトにするほど不動の人気を獲得している。特にライヴパフォーマンスの成長には著しいものがある。レーザー光線を多用した視覚的な演出にも惹き付けられるが、デビューから３年で積み上げた表現力には血の通ったすごみが宿り、思わずぽかんと口が開けてしまうほどの迫力に漲っている。ただ、バンドの内部では昨年ベーシストのMashuの脱退があり、一瞬やきもきしたが、すぐにKeiが加入して活動を続行させたので、ファンもひと安心だろう。」

「そして、新体制で初めて作り上げたニューシングル「Rave-up Tonight」がここに届いた。約１年半振りの音源ということで、待ちに待った人も多いに違いない。内容は新曲３曲に、BOOM BOOM SATELLITES、石野卓球、ヒャダインというユニークな顔ぶれが手がけたリミックス3曲を収めた全6曲入り。ちなみに初回生産限定なので、早く手に入れたほうがいいだろう。」

「前作2ndアルバム『All That We Have Now』は幻想的なジャケにも表れていたように、プログレッシブかつストーリー性に長けたパートを織り込み、楽曲にさらなる磨きをかけていた。が、今作はミラーボール、レーザー光線、スピーカーの壁、フロアーというジャケからも分かる通り、何よりライヴの高揚感を意識したナンバーがずらり揃っている。表題曲はラスベガスの本領発揮と言えるダンサブルな曲調で、天井を突き破るキャッチャーなサビ、肉体を揺さぶる躍動感あふれるパート、言葉の連打でコミカルな表情も見せるなど、彼らの特性を総動員したパワフルな楽曲だ。「The Courage to Take Action」はヘヴィなリフ、クラシカルな鍵盤、新加入のKeiがスラップベースを披露したりと、激しさと静けさがメビウスの輪のように展開する起伏感が聴きどころになっている。「Step of Terror」は、ほぼスクリームの片道攻撃で押しまくるアグレッシヴな曲調でライヴ映え間違いナシ。」

「それから気になるリミックスだが、さすがひと筋縄ではいかないメンツが揃っているだけに、それぞれの独自色を打ち出した仕上がりで、これはぜひとも原曲と聴き比べてほしい。とりわけ、ヒャダインが手がけた「Chase the Light!」は遊び心にあふれ、こう来たか！と驚いた。ラスベガスの印象を損なうことなく、テーマパークを彷彿させるフレーズを違和感なく挿入している。間違いなくバンドにもいい刺激剤となるであろう豪華なリミックスだ。今作は全編通して、“Rave-up=乱痴気”パーティーできる最高の一枚である。」
