【the pillows】新宿ロフトにて22年ぶり一夜限りの“上田ケンジ復活ライブ”を敢行

　the pillowsが結成25周年を記念して開催する『NEVER ENDING STORY』。1月19日、その一発目である『Do You Remember The 1st Movement』が、バンドにとって思い出深いライブハウス・新宿ロフトにて、初代メンバーの上田ケンジをベーシストに迎えて行われた。

　KENZI&THE TRIPS解散後の上田ケンジによって、the pillowsが結成されたのが25年前。この日は上田ケンジをベーシストとして迎え、“第１期”と呼ばれる時代の楽曲を20年ぶりに演奏。アニバーサリーイヤーに相応しいレアなライブとなった。

　爆弾ジョニー、シュリスペイロフと、上田、山中がそれぞれプロデュースするバンドが熱い演奏を終え、興奮と期待がピークを迎えた中、第１期the pillowsのメンバーがステージに登場。

　いきなり演奏されたのは、1991年発売のデビューアルバム『MOON GOLD』の1曲目「キミがいる」。2曲目はthe pillows自体の1st アルバムである『パントマイム』から「RAZORLIKE BLUE」。この曲は山中が高校生の時に作り、上田ケンジとの出会いとなった、二人にとって思い出深い楽曲。

　「22年ぶりのピロウズです」との上田のMCを挟んで、3曲目は1stシングル「雨にうたえば」。2ndアルバム『WHITE INCARNATION』から「ペーパームーンにこしかけて」。ロマンチックで、どこかthe pillowsの歴史の長さを物語るような名曲「僕らのハレー彗星」を披露した後、２度目のMCでは「22年ぶりのピロウズはどう？」との山中のフリに、「全然変わってないね、シンちゃん以外は」と笑いをとる上田。山中は「今回、全バンド札幌出身で揃えてみました」とただ一人、茨城出身の佐藤にむかって話しかけ笑いを返す。

　6曲目にはインディー2ndアルバムから「巴里の女性マリー」、そして7曲目には上田のコーラスも印象的で、第一期the pillowsラブソングの代表曲とも言える「このままここで」。メンバー紹介で上田は「こんな場所に呼んでもらって嬉しい」とピロウズメンバーに感謝を伝え、山中は「上田さんが発掘した中で、今のところ1番成功した山中さわおです」との温かいMCで会場を暖かい雰囲気に包む。

　そして観客も全て巻き込んだエナジーコールで25年前にタイムスリップしたかのような盛り上がりを魅せた「エネルギー」。「WANT TO SLEEP FOR」、「サリバンになりたい」で、ロフトは完全にあの頃の燃えるような盛り上がりをみせる。本編最後は「さよなら 第三惑星」。山中さわおの生き様、the pillowsの25年を物語るようなラストソング。興奮に確かな印象をプラスし本編を終える。

　終演後、拍手は鳴りやまずアンコールへ。山中は「25周年をこんな素晴らしいライブでスタートできて嬉しい。上田さんが辞めて3人になった時はバンドをこんなに長く続けられるとは思っていなかった。音楽が好きなバンドと、音楽が好きなみんなのおかげでバンドを続けられて、そしてこんな素敵なライブができたことが嬉しい、ありがとう！」とMCをしたあと、そんな気持ちそのままの「90'S MY LIFE」では、長くロックも人生も積み重ねたものだけが残せる音楽の素晴らしさを会場に伝えて、アンコールを終える。ダブルアンコールでは全員がビールを持って登場。演奏した曲は、「ぼくはかけら」。もはや言葉は要らない。充実感に包まれて、あっという間の22年ぶりの再会ライブは終演を迎えた。

　この後、the pillowsは2月26日のトリビュート盤発売リリース。そして3月末からの東名阪ホールツアーでは、“第2期”と呼ばれるキングレコード移籍後数年の楽曲を中心にした、記念ライブ第2弾を行うことが決まっている。盛りだくさんのthe pillows25周年イヤーはまだまだ続く。
