BRAHMAN、言葉と行動が近くなるほどストレスがない

BRAHMANがシングル「霹靂」を完成させた。東日本大震災以降、積極的に行動してきた彼ら。その等身大の思いが感じられる3曲に共鳴を覚えずにはいられない。TOSHI-LOW（Vo）に作品を発端に最近の活動に至るまで、深く話を訊いた。


──久々のリリースになりましたね。

ただ、タマがないっていうだけの話。何でもかんでも売ろうとは思わないので。

──じゃあ、リリースしたいと思える楽曲ができたから？

リリースすることに大きな意味が付いたっていうほうが正しいかな。3.11っていう。ただ、『賽の河原』の歌詞以外は、震災前からあったんだけど。

──そうなんですね。以前、OVERGROUND ACOUSTIC

──UNDERGROUNDの『夢の跡』のリリースの際に“震災以前、音楽活動に対して諦めていたことがあった”という話をうかがいましたけど、そんな心境の中でも曲は生まれていたんですね。

いや、沸き出るものがなかったから諦めようと思っていたんだよ。これも、ギリギリひねり出したようなもので。作っている段階は自分を延命しているようで気持ち悪かった。ただ、レコーディングは4月にやったんだけど、手元にあるものをかたちにしたい欲求が出て、ほぼ全部一発録りで録ったんだよね。『賽の河原』も3人がトラックを作っているのを見ながら歌詞を書いたんだけど。

──そうなんですね。「賽の河原」はすごく自由な展開が人間臭くて、確かに一発録りが似合う瞬発力を感じます。

変な曲だって言いたいわけでしょ？

──いや（笑）。でも、歪とか変って人間臭いと思います。

そうそう。でも、整理整頓しようとしてきたでしょ、最近の社会の流れなんかを考えると。バンドも上手い人は多いけど、上手いなって思うだけで。そこは俺たちの衝動じゃないから。音楽を奏でるものが楽器じゃない、人生を奏でるものがたまたま楽器だったっていう話で。

──なるほど。確かに、音楽を頭でっかちで聴く人が増えた感じはします。心で聴いたほうが楽しいのになって。

そうそう。みんな頭の生活になっていて、そこから外れると悪いってことになるでしょ？　それは違う。心でも聴いていれば、外したほうがカッコ良いって思うだろうし。

──確かに、外れてしまっているところにこそ、思想や人間そのままが出ている感じはしますよね。

だから、規律や規範好きが意外に多いんだなぁって思っていたの。俺ら、そういう世代じゃないから（笑）。クラスにいた学級委員の子分みたいな子たちが増えたなって。

──しかも、ロックシーンまで。

そういうのが嫌だからバンドを選んだのにね。理由は分かってるけどね。規律があれば安心だっていう。そこに対して“うーん”って思いつつも、俺らは俺らだしって思っていたけれども、日本がこういうふうになって、嫌われようが、自分たちを出していったほうが面白いなって思って。そこで生じる軋轢すら人間だと思っているから。ここが良くて、ここが悪いっていうところに当てはまらないものがいっぱいあるっていう触れ方を、もっともっとしていきたい。

──特に、最近はインタビューとかでもTOSHI-LOWさんは赤裸々に話してくれるから、曲もライヴも人間像も、全てがつながって、全ての説得力が高まっている気がします。

今までは、出さなくてもいいかなって思っていたから。でも、ステージに立ってる自分も、普段の自分も一緒だったら隠すことがないし、アーティストのイメージとかで自分が怖がっていただけの話で。とにかく、自分の人生は全力でバンドですっていうほうが面白い。

──MCをするようになったのも、そこが理由ですか？

俺のMCは自分たちのライヴを助けるためじゃなく、今日しかできない一曲みたいなMCだから。なーんにも躊躇する必要はないというか。だって、こういうふうに思われたいって頑張っても、逆に思われるでしょ？（笑）　だったら、自分が信じている生き方をしたほうが楽しいよね。

──今は楽しいですか？

楽しいし、楽だよ。相変わらず歪んだ自己愛も自己嫌悪もあるけど。ただ、自分を守ってるのは疲れるけど、攻めてるのは楽っていうか。単純に良いも悪いも自分の全てを受け止めることだったんだなって思うし。それに、3.11で気付かせてもらった気がする。言葉と行動が近くなるほど、ストレスがない。それがもっともっと一緒になっていけばいいと思う。社会的な付き合いもそうだけど、ここだけの話みたいなものがいっぱいあるのは良くないよね。それで成り立っていたものが、今の社会の歪みなわけだから。

──情報操作とか言われたり…。

そうそう。でも、政治家じゃなくてもできることはいっぱいあって、自分に素直に生きるだけでも世の中は変わるんじゃないかな。まぁ、今までやっていたこととも同じで、今日のステージをどんだけやり切るかっていうことに命をかけていたけどね。頑張って上手くならずに（笑）。やっぱりルーティーンになったらダメだと思うから。

──素直に生きることが、全曲日本語詞というところにもつながったんですかね。

日本人というところから逃げたくなかったのもあって。それは民族思想とかじゃなくて。3.11以降、ニュースで毎日のように日本地図を見ていたでしょ。こういう国に住んでいたんだって思うこともいっぱいあったからね。

──今回もハッとさせられるお話をいろいろ聞けました。

そういうことじゃなく、ふざけたことだけ書けよ（笑）
