PENICILLIN、結成23年目にして初の全曲カヴァーのアルバム発売

バンド結成23年を迎えたPENICILLINが2015年第１弾リリースとして、バンド史上初のカヴァーアルバム『Memories ～Japanese Masterpieces～』を3月18日(水) に発表する。

シングルのカップリングとして発表された「シルエットロマンス」「桃色吐息」「飾りじゃないのよ涙は」「プレイバック part2」「夢の途中 〜セーラー服と機関銃〜」「北ウイング」をはじめ、新たにカヴァーされた楽曲たちは“女性歌手の歌謡曲”をテーマに選曲！

演歌とヘヴィロックを見事に融合させ、女の情念たっぷりに歌い上げた石川さゆりの「天城越え」。異国情緒あふれる独特の旋律を、疾走感あるバンドサウンドと流麗な歌声で、一気に彼らの世界へと引き込む久保田早紀の「異邦人」。昭和な懐かしい風景とともに、切なくもあたたかい叙情的な世界観を描いたイルカの「なごり雪」。またボーナストラックには唯一の男性歌手の歌謡曲も。リスペクトを込め原曲のキーのまま歌い上げた、松崎しげるの「愛のメモリー」を収録するなど、昭和を代表する名曲ばかり。

カヴァーをするにあってオリジナル作品を徹底的に分析、理解したうえでアレンジしたことで、オリジナル作品の特徴や良さを残しながら見事にPENICILLINサウンドへと昇華させている。そして、PENICILLINの“新たな一面”と同時に、改めて“らしさ”が浮き彫りになった。『Memories ～Japanese Masterpieces～』というタイトルの如く、その時代だからこそ生まれた名曲であり、それらは私たちの記憶の中のどこかに必ず存在する。Japanese Masterpieces──日本の一要素であることをPENICILLINが表現している。

また、初回盤のジャケットにはメンバーがリスペクトしてやまない「TO-Y」や「SEX」の作者、マンガ家の上條淳士氏の書き下ろしによるメンバーのイラストになっている。PENICILLINのバンド名の由来も「TO-Y」の中から来ていることもあり、まさにメモリーな作品となるだろう。
